Ukrainian troops have taken over the entire Kyiv region, but have found widespread evidence of what the Kyiv government says about war crimes committed by Russian troops. These include streets found on the streets, evidence of civilian casualties, full graves and children killed.
Another woman interviewed by the Guardian, Halyna Tovkach, says her husband was killed by Russians and two children and their mother while trying to escape the war in Bucha. Other suspects among the Russians killed were Olha Sukhenko, the head of the Motyzhin district east of Kyiv, and his entire family.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and a number of other officials have blamed Russian troops for leaving mines and other explosives as they retreated to the Kyiv region. In Irpin, workers found 643 explosives.
Russia has been specifically accused by the Ukrainian attorney general of using children as "human shields" while mobilizing its troops, as the first witness in the recently liberated town of Bucha, northwest of Kyiv, emerged. The children's trainers were reportedly placed in front of the tanks in the village of Novyi Bykiv, near the town surrounded by Chernihiv, 100 miles [100 km] north of Kyiv.
Zelenskiy reiterated his warning that Russian troops wanted to capture the Donbas in southern Ukraine. In his overnight video speech, the Ukrainian president said he "knows the enemy has the potential to increase pressure in the east" but lamented that the western coalition did not send enough anti-missile programs.
A series of explosions and smoke were heard in the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa on Sunday morning, witnesses said.
A Ukrainian peace negotiator reportedly said that Russia "" verbally "welcomes Ukraine's position on peace talks, reports AFP, with the exception of the Crimea issue. Moscow also acknowledged that a referendum on Ukraine's neutrality" would be the only way out. "
Turkey is a potential source of peace talks between Zelenskiy and Vladimir Putin, reports Interfax Ukraine.
The Red Cross delegation to Mariupol will once again try to evacuate civilians from the besieged port as Russian troops appear to be regrouping to attack the new southeast. Maksim Levin, a Ukrainian photographer, was also found dead near Kyiv. The defense ministry said Kevin, whose work appeared in a BBC and Reuters report, had been shot twice by Russian soldiers.
The UK has said authorities are working to gather evidence of Russian war crimes. Liz Truss, Britain's foreign secretary, wrote on Twitter that she was checking out new information from the Kyiv region.
The Baltic states have suspended all Russian oil purchases, and are urging the rest of the European Union to follow suit.
The UK military intelligence service says Russia has not yet been able to overthrow Ukraine's military and air defense forces. This failure "severely hampered their efforts to achieve broader air control, which in turn had a significant impact on their ability to support the development of their junior forces in many areas".
Pope Francis is very close when he has not openly criticized Vladimir Putin for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, calling it "powerful" and fueling conflicts for national interests.
