SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Police say six people were killed and at least 10 others injured in a shooting on Sunday morning in the city of Sacramento.

Sacramento police chief Kathy Lester told a news conference that police were patrolling the area around 2am when they heard gunshots. When they arrived at the scene they found a crowd gathered on the road killing six people. The other 10 took themselves or were rushed to hospitals.

Authorities are unaware that one or more suspects are involved and are seeking public assistance in identifying the culprit. Lester did not provide specific details on the type of firearm used.

This is a "complex and complex phenomenon," he said. Lester appealed to the public, asking witnesses and anyone with records of the incident to contact the police.

Sacramento police are offering a $ 1,000 reward for any information leading to a shooter. They have opened a website for people to bring evidence like photos or videos.

A video posted on Twitter showed people running on the road as the sound of gunfire was heard in the background. Video shows that more ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

Berry Accius of Sacramento Voice of Youth said he arrived at the scene around 2.30am and found "chaos".

"Many of the victims are bloodthirsty, just looking at some of the families who did not know their loved one was alive, running, trying to find out what was going on, people are confused, people are confused," Accius said. "It was just bad."

The scene is packed with restaurants and bars. It leads to the Golden One Center, where the Sacramento Kings play basketball.

"Another shooting. We lost many lives. The gun epidemic has hit our community - again," Sacramento city councilor Katie Valenzuela tweeted.

"I'm just amazed that someone would come here to a place where it should be safe to do such a horrible thing as so many victims, not just by shooting but dead in our city," Accius said. "Right here in the city, in a safe place."

Kay Harris, 32, said he was asleep when one of his family members called to say they thought his brother had been killed. He said he thought he was in London, a nightclub on 1009 10th Street.

Harris said he had been to the club a few times and described it as a "small crowd."

Police cordoned off the area around the club, with a yellow police tape in the morning and a gentle breeze in the morning. He has spent the morning circling the block waiting for news.

"It's a very senseless act of violence," he said
