The UN General Assembly on Thursday approved a US-led decision to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council over increasing evidence of atrocities perpetrated by Russian troops in Ukraine.

The US ambassador to the United States, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, launched a campaign to suspend Russia from the 47-member Human Rights Council after videos and photos from the city of Kyiv, Bucha, surfaced on streets littered with civilian bodies after Russian troops withdrew.

"War criminals have no place in UN agencies aimed at protecting human rights," Ukrainian Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya wrote on Twitter after the vote. "I thank all the member states who supported the right decision of UNGA and chose the right side of history."

Russia becomes the first full member of the U.N. Security Council. withdrawal of its membership from any U.N. organization. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier this week also called for Russia to be removed from the Security Council so that it can use its veto powers to "block decisions about its aggression."

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Kuzmin dismissed Russia's involvement in the massacre, saying the evidence was "a deliberate and widely publicized scandal." He dismissed the decision as an attempt by the United States to "maintain its supremacy and total control."
