The making of Santorini
The beautiful island of Santorini is made of mud and has changed form several times over the years. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have shaped the island into what it is today. Santorini has a volcanic origin and consists of several islands aligned with a ring around a water-filled caldera. Volcanoes have been active throughout the island. Between 198 BC and 1950 AD, there were an estimated 12 more eruptions. The first inhabitants of Santorini go back to the Neolithic period, about 3000 BC. As a result of the search and excavation, Santorini developed a magnificent civilization, as these people lived in two- and three-story houses, and had storage rooms and drainage systems. One of the highlights is the "Ancient Minoan Akrotiri", a 3,500-year-old Minoan city nestled in the volcanic ash, located in the southern part of the island, between the village of Akrotiri and the famous Red Sea. This prehistoric city is often referred to as the "Apegean Pompeii".
In Greece, Santorini is also known as Terah, named after the 12th century BC, by the Dorians from Sparta who colonized the island; they also named it after their master, Theres. It is the largest island, a small, circular island, and forms the southernmost member of the Cyclades archipelago, which covers an area of about 73 km2 (28 sq mi). Santorini's capital is Fira, with a population of about 15,550. The view of the Goliath caldera and the beautiful scenery of Santorini Island exemplifies volcanic activity.
How to Get the Best of Santorini
Santorini is a limited access point, as many other Greek islands have much to offer on the beaches. If you are visiting Santorini, you should stay on the caldera tops which are true gems of inspiring ideas and facial expressions. The caldera is a 12-kilometer stretch from Fira to Oia. Oia is a well-known village but also very crowded. We therefore recommend merging Imerovigli and Oia so that they can live comfortably in Santorini. Ideally, it may be best to schedule at least 5 nights to experience the true beauty of Santorini.
